Dog Licensing Fee Schedule

All dogs 4 months of age and older, or dogs under 4 months who have been “at large” must be licensed. Licensing issuance is done through the Town of Plattekill Town Clerk’s office. In order to obtain a license, the dog must have a current and valid rabies certificate.

Fees for licensing of dogs:

A. The fee for a spayed or neutered dog shall be $6 plus a state-mandated surcharge of $1 for the purpose of carrying out animal population control.
B. The fee for an un-spayed or un-neutered dog shall be $12 plus a state-mandated surcharge of $3 for the purpose of carrying out animal population control.
C. All fees, set forth in this chapter, shall be reviewed by the Town Board from time to time and may be changed by a resolution of the Town Board.

There shall be no license fee required for any license issued to a service dog, guide dog, hearing dog, war dog, working search dog, detection dog, police dog or therapy dog.

SEVEN GOOD REASONS TO LICENSE YOUR DOG:

  1. It’s the Law! All dogs 4 months of age and older are required to be licensed. Failure to do so can cost you a fine that is more than the licensing fee!
  2. A license tells everyone that your pet is not a homeless stray.
  3. Found pets can be reunited quickly with their owner. We will attempt to contact you immediately. This may save you and your dog a trip to the Municipal Shelter and Impound Fees.
  4. Your pet license is proof that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies. Making it more likely for a concerned citizen to handle your dog while contacting us.
  5. In the event that your dog is hurt or struck by a car, it provides critical information of ownership so that you can be part of the decision making process when emergency medical care is needed for your dog.
  6. Your dog may get a longer holding period if the information is current. For Example: You may go on vacation and your dog got away from the appointed caregiver during your trip. We may add a couple of extra days in holding while attempting to find a neighbor or family member who knows how to get in touch with you.
  7. If your dog is licensed and becomes impounded, you will be able to take the dog home right away and your fines will be less. If your dog is not licensed you can not redeem your dog until you have obtained a license from the Town of Plattekill’s Town Clerk. If your dog is impounded on a weekend you will have to wait until the next business day to redeem your dog.

All Dogs in the Town of Plattekill are required to be “leashed” or otherwise “effectively restrained” from
coming into accidental contact with the general public (whether the dog will bite or not).

The General public would include:

  • People walking down your street, or riding bikes
  • Postal carriers
  • Emergency Personnel i.e.; Police and Firemen
  • All of Your neighbors
  • Someone who is lost and knocks on your door to ask directions
